Travel by Bus
Bus service is very limited in route and schedule. Most service is concen-
trated along the I-95 corridor from Boston, through Portland, Lewiston,
Augusta and on to Bangor. Most firms do run buses up US 1 from Port-
land to Bangor. Year-round, buses run from Bangor to Caribou with stops
in between. Seasonally, buses run from Bangor to Bar Harbor with one
run each way daily.
Taking the bus these days is a much more pleasant experience than it
was 20 years ago. Some bus companies now offer “in-flight” movies on
video monitors overhead as well as snacks and a beverage. Each seat also
sports multiple channels of music. Passengers can listen with private
headsets.
Most express bus service can take people from one downtown to another
faster than you can make it in a private car.
Major cities such as Portland, Lewiston and Bangor have city bus lines.
On Mount Desert Island, a new shuttle bus service connecting hotels,
campgrounds and Acadia National Park trailheads and areas of interest
