ost people have probably heard the old Maine expression “you can't
get there from here.” That may seem like nonsense nowadays, but
during the era of settlement it rang all too true. With few roads, fewer
bridges, and tough terrain, many people on the move would often find
themselves in sight of their destinations but with no way to get there.
