Covered Bridge
Covered bridges are a quintessential symbol of New England. Typical of
Yankee frugality, the spans were covered over to afford the structure pro-
tection from wind and rain, make it easier to keep the decking free of
snow and ice, and to help keep horses calm while crossing high over rush-
ing streams. At their high point there were hundreds of covered bridges
throughout the region. Most succumbed to old age, fire, or flood.
Watson Settlement Bridge - 1911 , Meduxnekeag Stream. Located off
US 1, on the road to Woodstock from Littleton, in the town of Littleton.
This is the farthest north as well as the youngest covered bridge in the
state.

Allagash Ice Caves : One of Maine's more unusual natural fea-
tures is just a short walk from a campsite on Allagash Lake,
which must be accessed by water. Canoeists often take two days
to get into the lake by taking the difficult six-mile upstream passage from
Chamberlain Lake, part of the official Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
The ice caves, a boulder field with multiple underground entrances
where winter's snow and ice lasts all year, can be found by following an
unmarked but easy-to-follow trail from the Ice Caves campsite on the
