Rockwood
The Birches , PO Box 41, Rockwood 04478. Located on a point about
midway up the west side of Moosehead Lake on Route 15, the Birches of-
fers 15 log cabins with running water and electricity, one or two baths,
cooking facilities, roofed porch and wood stoves. Pets allowed. The
lakeside dining room in the main lodge serves up prime rib, seafood,
chicken and vegetarian dishes. The lodge has four B&B rooms. The same
firm also operates a system of backcountry yurts and cabin tents. Open
year-round. Moderate.

Kineo House , PO Box 397, Rockwood 04478. You have to take a shuttle
boat from Rockwood to reach this attractive inn on a peninsula at the
base of 800-foot Mount Kineo. Six rooms. Cable television. Lounge.
Lunch and dinner offered to the public. Nine-hole golf course. Moderate.

The Forks
Northern Outdoors , PO Box 100, The Forks 04985. A total adventure
trip company that runs a variety of lodgings, as well as a brew pub. Lo-
cated on Route 201. Activities offered: a climbing wall, whitewater raft-
ing, rock climbing, guided canoe, kayak and float trips, fishing and
snowmobiling. Accommodations include log cabins with ¾ baths and
mini-kitchenettes, a large condo off the main lodge that sleeps 10, four-
bedroom cottage, “logdominum” units that sleep up to eight each and
standard motel-like lodge rooms. Pool, tennis court, sauna and 16-person
hot tub. Owned by raconteur Wayne Hockmeyer, inventor of the famous
Banjo Minnow lure that supposedly drives fish crazy. Moderate to expen-
sive.
