Snowmobiling
Maine's Great North Woods is prime snowmobiling country. The
machines allow riders access to areas that may be too remote or
gated off in better weather.
Jackman
Located on the shore of Big Wood Pond, Jackman puts out its welcome
mat for snowmobilers. There is no place in town - shop, restaurant, lodg -
ing establishment - that can't be reached by sled. Most have their own
exits clearly marked off the ITS.
There are big woods around Jackman and plenty of trails and tote roads
to explore. Favorite rides include a cruise up to the Canadian border
where you can clear Customs on the sled and head another 30 miles into
Quebec to a clubhouse. As long as you go only there and back there is no
need to register your sled in Canada.
Other popular rides include south toward Eustis , and north and east to
Pittston Farm , a former logging supply outpost well north of
Moosehead Lake that now sells food and fuel to as many as 1,000 snow-
mobilers a day.
Greenville
Snowmobile trails branch out in every direction from Greenville. Includ-
ing ITS, club, and local trails, there's probably more than 300 miles of
trails. In fact, the town is so snowmobile friendly that it holds a parade
each year and a fireworks show out on frozen Moosehead Lake. There are
several day trips possible, including circumnavigations of the lake. The
longer trip takes riders through Rockwood, up to Northeast Carry, and
back down the east shore.
A shorter route follows the well-marked trail across the narrow part of
the lake at Rockwood to Mount Kineo . You can ride right to the base of
the 1,000-foot cliffs.
INTERESTING FACT: A warden counting sleds
crossing the lake at Kineo once clicked off 3,000 sleds
on a single Saturday when the weather was good.
On the east side of the Moosehead circuit plan to stop at the Kokadjo
Trading Post for a hearty lunch. This one tiny outpost will often have
more than 200 sleds parked outside.
From Greenville riders can also head over to Jackman or south to the
Monson , Dover-Foxcroft area.
