Perhaps the best way to explore Moosehead Lake's hundreds of
miles of shoreline is to rent your own floating base camp. You
can wander around the lake for a week or return each night to your slip at
the marina in town. This firm rents 30-foot houseboats, all of which are
very stable due to their catamaran design. Each has a cabin and topside
sundeck. Ideal for four to six people. Houseboats include 50 hp motor, ma-
rine radio, life jackets and safety gear as well as a depth sounder. Ame-
nities include hot-air furnace, fresh water tank, shower and flush toilets.
The galley has a two-burner stove, ice chest, dishes, utensils, pots and
pans. Towels, blankets and pillows are provided. Prices are $165 per day
or a maximum of $1,000 per week. No pets. There is plenty of parking,
and instruction on operating a houseboat is free. Security deposit re-
quired. Renter is responsible for deductible on insurance ($800) in the
event of an accident or damage.

Kineo Boat Shuttle
. An open shuttle boat from Rockwood on
the west shore of Moosehead Lake to Mount Kineo (see
Parks &
Preserves
) runs every hour in season, and every two hours in
June. Round-trip fare is around $5 per person. Boat operated by Regis-
tered Maine Guide. Next door is a comfortable, intimate and friendly full-
service inn, the Kineo House.

Katahdin Cruises

Katahdin
, affectionately referred
to by the locals as “The Kate.”
This steamship is the last representative of a fleet of vessels that worked
rafts of logs around the lake and delivered passengers and freight. This is
the best way to see the area, particularly in foliage season (late Septem-
ber). Operated by the non-profit Moosehead Marine Museum. Tours vary
from three to six hours in length. Adult ticket prices range from $13 to
$32, children pay less.
