Route 15, Bangor to Greenville
71 miles, 1½ hours
Highlights: Sitting at the south end of majestic Moosehead Lake,
Greenville is often called the Gateway to the North Maine Woods. That's
all fine, but first you have to get here. Route 15 from Bangor is the most di-
rect and scenic route.
Route: In the city of Bangor itself, Route 15 is actually called Broadway.
It seems fitting that you start this trip surrounded by strip malls and fast
food joints only to end in vast wilderness.
A short way north of Interstate 95 Broadway narrows and becomes two
lane. It heads roughly north and crosses the Kenduskeag Stream at Six
Mile Falls.
Canoe Race
Six Mile Falls is a popular place to watch thousands of canoeists
test the fast-flowing water each spring in the Kenduskeag
Stream Race (
947-1018), one of the largest in New England.
Houses and businesses spread out as you pass through Glenburn and
into the village of Kenduskeag , some 10 miles beyond the falls, where
the race begins.
Route 15 then heads due north, favoring high ground through the farms
and woods of Corinth and into Charleston with its intimidating Bull
