South Lagrange to Medford Railbed . Like other rails-to-trails con-
versions in Maine the 12-mile route from South Lagrange to Medford of-
fers easy grades and comparatively smooth riding. It is a multi-use trail
open to ATVs in summer and snowmobiles in winter. There is a signed
parking area where the old rail line once crossed Route 16. The trail
heads pretty much north through wet woods and open fields. There are
several major road crossings to watch for. When you get to the village of
Medford, you'll find a nice picnic spot on the banks of the Piscataquis
River.
Shirley Mills to Greenville Railbed . This route starts where the Up-
per Shirley Mills Corner Road passes close to the south end of a pond. The
trailhead and a good place to park are on the east shore. The route follows
an abandoned rail bed due north into Greenville on a gradual grade. It
passes by several smaller ponds and through swampy areas. Keep an eye
out for moose! Popular snowmobile route in winter. Another ride is possi-
ble to the south on the same abandoned railbed. It continues all the way
south to Dover Foxcroft.
Arnold's Landing to Bingham Railbed, Solon. Hugging the banks of
the Kennebec River, this path starts out at a dam and massive aban-
doned steel truss railroad bridge built on a large falls in river.
DID YOU KNOW? This place is called Arnold's
Landing because it is a spot where Col. Benedict Ar-
nold portaged his colonial fighting force in 1775 on
an ill-fated mission to attack Quebec City.
The trail is a seven-mile gradual grade with only a few wet spots. Used by
snowmobiles in winter.
