Covered Bridge
In an era when stern chaperones kept a constant eye on courting couples,
young lovers particularly liked the privacy afforded by these structures,
many of which have succumbed to old age, fire, or flood. To romancers, a
trip across a covered bridge was the perfect opportunity to steal a kiss.
Low's Bridge - 1857 , Piscataquis River. This structure was originally
built in 1857, carried away by flood in 1987, and then rebuilt in 1990. It is
located off Routes 6 and 15, three-quarters of a mile east and one mile
north of Sangerville, between the towns of Sangerville and Guilford.
Adventures On Foot
Hiking
For hikes in Baxter State Park, see that section at the begin-
ning of this chapter.
Boarstone Mountain, Elliotsville Township . With a pair of
open summits, attractive ponds and great views of the surrounding
ranges, Boarstone is one of the finest day hikes in Maine. The elevation
gain on the two-mile hike is just over 1,000 feet.
The trail begins off the Elliotsville Road a short distance after it crosses
the Canadian Pacific Railroad tracks. Park across from the gate that
blocks the private auto road that comprises the first mile of this trip. Af-
ter a series of switchbacks on the road the route become a bona fide trail,
skirting the south end of Sunrise Pond, part of a series of three small
jewel-like lakes on the mountain. The last part of the trail to the top of
West Peak is very steep and may require use of hands.
The best views are from the slightly higher East Peak, another quarter-
mile further. Sights from here Lake Onawa below to the east and Barren
Mountain beyond that. Moderate to strenuous. Owned by the Audubon
Society and operated as a preserve for day use only with nature program
and interpretive center part way up the trail. Small fee charged. Dogs not
allowed.
