The trail to twin peaks at the summit follows an old logging road for part
of the way. Open daytime only from June through October. There is a
nominal fee. Take Elliotsville Road from Route 15 in Monson.

Bowater River Pond Outdoor Classroom, Millinocket : Two self-
guided trails - one six miles, the other 4½ miles - traverse 230 acres
adjacent to the Golden Road. Nearly 50 acres are in tree plantation, 110
in harvest crops. Sixty acres were cut in the 1930s. Stops along the trail
include a borrow pit (gravel pit), riparian zone, wildlife sites and exhibits
on tree harvesting techniques. Brochures available by mail or at the
Debsconeag checkpoint on the Golden Road. Adequate parking, no fee.

Brownville
Katahdin Iron Works (1843). From Route 11, five miles north
of Brownville Jct., take gravel road (left) six miles to Iron
Works. Restored stone blast furnace and charcoal kiln on site of
19th-century iron works that produced some 18-20 tons of raw iron daily
during its periods of peak operation in the 1880s.
