The park operates on fees and interest from a modest endowment. The
only state funds used are for maintenance of the rough gravel perimeter
road, which is one of the few places where cars and trucks are allowed.
Park Rules
No pets.
Camping is allowed in designated areas only.
Vehicle size limited to 22 feet for a single vehicle, 44 feet for
vehicle and trailer.
Motorcycles and ATVs are banned. Bicycles permitted on
roads only.
Speed limit: 20 miles per hour.
Vehicles parked outside designated areas are subject to
towing at owner's expense.
Group size limited to 12. Camping only in group areas.
No children under age six allowed above timberline.
Technical climbers must register with the park.
Hunting allowed only in two small areas in the far north
and south.
Use of chainsaws, generators and other power equipment
is prohibited.
General Maine laws and regulations on drugs, alcohol,
fishing are in effect.
All trash and waste must be packed out.
The best place to get acquainted with the park is at the visitor center and
reservation office in Millinocket. There is a short audio-visual orienta-
tion program about the park and books, maps and arm patches can be
purchased.
Gov. Baxter saw his park as a place where people could go to escape the
shackles of civilization and refresh themselves with nature. His gift and
vision accomplished that and more.
