In-Depth Information
Maine's Great North Woods require more effort to reach and may not al-
ways offer as many creature comforts as other parts of the state. But that
is usually just fine with those who seek to cast off the burdens of civiliza-
tion and find escape in true wild lands.
Note: Maine has one area code - 207.
Parks & Preserves
Private Lands
The vast majority of land in the Great North Woods is private, owned by
paper companies and land holding firms. As a matter of tradition it is
open to the public for fishing, hunting, camping, hiking and canoeing.
Some paper company roads are gated and modest fees are charged for
day use and for use of campsites or cabins maintained by these compa-
nies. Occasionally, a small area may be closed for safety reasons during
timber harvesting operations.
Travel Hazards on Private Lands
Lumber and log trucks always have the right of way on
paper company roads. They are not bound to the same weight
or speed limits as on state roads and the trucks are large and
fast. If you see one coming - get out of the way! Be especially
wary on the one-lane bridges.
Hazards on the dirt portions include dust clouds, unexpected
ruts and potholes, and wandering animals.
Dirt roads can be remarkably slippery after a rain so be care -
ful.
Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and gas up before
heading into the outback.
Most intersections and connecting roads are not signed; if you
are lucky they may be numbered. Pick up a good map.
