Mount Pisgah, Winthrop
: Mount Pisgah may not be the tallest moun-
tain around, but its proximity to the major metropolitan areas of
Lewiston and Augusta make it a favorite escape. From the trailhead off
the Pisgah Mountain Road, the route heads quickly up to the summit fol-
lowing a power line for a short distance. The trail to the summit is only a
mile long, with an elevation gain of 400 feet. There is a fire tower and
some antennas at the top as well as great views of the Western Moun-
tains and the Presidential Range to the far west. Moderate effort re-
quired.
Passadumkeag Mountain, Grand Falls Township
: Woods roads and
foot trails combine to provide fit hikers a long day trip to the top of this
1,463-foot peak. With an elevation gain of 900 feet, this is a very strenu-
ous hike. Begin on the Greenfield Road at a cluster of cabins in a field.
Continue another 5½ miles down a rough dirt road to the trailhead near a
small cabin and pond. The trail leads steeply 1½ miles to the top. There is
an old fire tower and some communications gear at the top. Views extend
in all directions.
