year-old Adirondack-style lodge nestled in the shadow of Caribou Moun-
tain in the White Mountains National Forest. Heated with wood the es-

1860, this camp offers 10 rustic log housekeeping cabins, each with full
bath, running water, and wood stoves. Located on the shore of crystal-
clear Tim Pond. Camp runs a daily moose watch. American Plan avail-

Farmington
Farmington Motel , PO Box 447, Farmington 04938. Located off Routes
2 and 27, this 40-room hotel is AAA approved and very affordable. It is
open year-round, has cable and phones, and is handicapped-accessible.
Near snowmobile trails and the Sandy River. Inexpensive.

Fryeburg
Acres of Austria B&B , RR 1, Box 177, Fryeburg 04037. Located on Fire
Lane 48, Route 5. This inn with an Austrian flair overlooks 65 acres, in-
cluding a half-mile of frontage on the Old Saco River. Owners Candice
and Franz Redl speak both English and German to their visitors. There
are four rooms, each with a private bath; some are handicapped-
accessible. Canoes available. No smoking or pets. Special theme week-
ends offered throughout the year, such as quilting demonstrations, a
murder mystery weekend, and seminars on getting a book or magazine
piece published. Rates vary, but they are generally in the moderate

Kingfield
The Herbert , PO Box 67, Kingfield 04947. Dubbed “The Ritz of the
Woods,” the Herbert is a four-story wooden structure in the heart of a
quaint village on Main Street. Most rooms boast jacuzzis and are fur-
nished with brass beds, antiques and cozy comforters. Warm apple cider
is provided for après ski folks. The hotel also has a sauna and a four-per-
son hot tub.
