State Parks
Grafton Notch State Park , North Newry. This is one of the
wildest and most scenic mountain areas in Maine. On Old Speck
(campsites and lean-to at pond near summit), the Appalachian
Trail crosses into Maine. Approach to the mountain is via Mahoosuc
Notch, reportedly the AT's toughest mile. Numerous roadside parking
places to picnic and play among tumbling waterfalls. There are natural
bridges and deep gorges in the area. Hiking trails run alongside interest-
ing land features, such as Moose Cave, Table Rock, and falls such as
Mother Walker and Screw Auger. Extended backpack trips possible. Ele-
vation gains of 2-3,000 feet in a mile or two are common. On Route 26.

Mount Blue State Park , Weld. This park near the shore of Lake Webb
has 3,187-foot Mount Blue as its centerpiece. Facilities include swim-
ming beach, hiking trails, camping, picnic tables, fire grates, boat launch
ramp, ATV trail, rentals and dump station. Fishing allowed. Winter use
includes cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Adequate parking for a
fee. Bisected by Route 142.

Rangeley Lake State Park , Rangeley. Comparatively small state park
(700 acres) located in just the perfect place on the south shore of Rangeley
Lake. Swimming and fishing are top notch, and there is plenty of hiking
nearby. Facilities include a campground, dump station, boat ramp, toi-
lets, showers, boat dock and picnic tables and fire rings. Stores nearby.

Sebago Lake State Park , Naples. A large, 1,300-acre wooded park on
north shore of one of Maine's largest lakes - Sebago. Activities include
swimming on sandy beaches, boating, canoeing on the winding Crooked
River and fishing. Park personnel schedule talks and other activities.
Campground and beach with bathhouse, toilets, picnic tables and grills,
dump station, boat rentals and a snack bar. Cross-country skiing in win-
ter.

Brownfield Bog Wildlife Management Area , Brownfield.
Nearly 3,000 arces of marsh and woodland make up this splen-
did preserve just off Route 160. Attractive mountain views.
Hunting, hiking, canoeing and camping allowed. (No phone.)
Hiram Nature Study Area , Hiram. Self-guided nature trails winds
through 60 forested acres along the sandy banks of the Saco River. Occa-
