For details on the many mountain bike trails in Acadia, see the
special Acadia section at the beginning of this chapter.
Moosehorn National
Wildlife Refuge, Baring
Two different units of this massive (24,400-acre) preserve are laced with
more than 50 miles of dirt roads perfect for mountain biking. Terrain in-
cludes woods, fields, bogs and streams. There are two sections - the
Baring Unit covers 17,200 acres; the Edmunds Unit, bordering tidal wa-
ters of Cobscook Bay near Dennysville, is more than 7,000 acres. Terrain
throughout is rolling hills. Roads are open to hikers and, in winter, snow-
mobilers. Wildlife is abundant throughout the year. Deer hunting, how-
ever, is allowed in November.
There's a Visitor Center in Baring on the Charolette Road. It has maps,
water and restrooms.
