Fish Hatcheries
Craig Brook National Hatchery, Orland . Located a short way off
Route 3 (follow the signs). Raises Atlantic salmon for stocking in several
Down East rivers including the Penobscot and Union. Visitor center, na-
ture trail, picnicking and swimming.

Grand Lake Stream State Fish Hatchery . Located in a picturesque
village. This state-run facility raises landlock salmon for lake stocking
program. Limited access to public. (No phone.)
Natural Areas/Preserves
The following preserves are all under the management of the
Nature Conservancy. Their main office is at 14 Maine Street,
Brunswick 04011.

Blagden Preserve, Bar Harbor . Located on Indian Point this 110-acre
preserve features wooded trails and a dirt road (foot travel only) to the
shore. Property once was a private estate.
WATCHABLE WILDLIFE: Blagden offers good
views of seals hauled out on rocks on nearby islands
and ledges. Good birding, too.
Crockett Cove Woods, Stonington . Coastal rain forest preserve of 100
acres just west of downtown Stonington. Mature spruce, swampy area.
Self-guided nature trail and good bird watching.
Great Wass Island, Beals . Give yourself plenty of time to explore this
1,500-acre preserve in Beals, just off Jonesport. Good parking. Maps and
information at the trailheads. Numerous hiking routes skirt ocean and
pass through lush forests with peatlands and rare plants. Day access
only. No camping, fires or pets. No facilities.
Mistake Island, Jonesport . A 21-acre island with lighthouse. Old
Coast Guard boardwalk allows touring without damage to rare vegeta-
tion. Boat access only.
Wreck Island Preserve, Stonington . An 80-acre island halfway be-
tween Stonington and Isle au Haut. Water access only with good anchor-
ages. Mix of abandoned fields, woods, ledges.
