Sandy River Beach, Jonesport . Small gravel and cobblestone beach
east of Jonesport. Tidal stream nearby. Public access but surrounded by
private property. Scant parking.
Wildlife Refuges
Birdsacre Sanctuary, Ellsworth . Quiet, wooded, 200-acre
parcel adjacent to busy commercial strip on Route 3 in
Ellsworth. Numerous nature trails wind among boulders and
three small ponds. Preserve headquarters once home of ornithologist
Cordelia Stanwood. Privately run non-profit. Collection of mounted birds
in museum. Adequate parking.

Cross Island National Wildlife Refuge, Cutler . This 1,703-acre is-
land complex is located just offshore and includes the satellites of Mink,
Scotch, Old Man and the Double Head Shot Islands. Islands are densely
forested and home to deer, eagles, waterfowl and sea birds. Terrain in-
cludes rocky cliffs 100 feet high. Several anchorages. Tour boat trips
scheduled out of Cutler.

Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, Baring . Way down in Wash-
ington County near Calais this massive 24,400-acre preserve is half the
size of Acadia National Park. Features woods, fields, bogs and streams.
Two sections - Baring Unit is 17,200 acres; Edmunds Unit bordering
tidal waters of Cobscook Bay near Dennysville is more than 7,000 acres.
Moosehorn is open daily, year-round. Visitor center in Baring on the
Charolette Road.

WATCHABLE WILDLIFE: Moosehorn is home to
more than two dozen species of mammals and 200 va-
rieties of birds, including many endangered species.
Woodcock studies are now underway. Deer hunting is
allowed.
Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge, Milbridge . Large 3,335-acre
set aside on Petit Manan peninsula and on Nash, Petit Manan and Bois
Bubert Islands. Some public-use restrictions in nesting sea bird areas.
Good birding throughout. Mainland portion is wooded with ledges and
swampy areas. Islands are windswept and accessible by private boat.
Bois Bubert offers some possibility of sheltered anchorage. Petit Manan
with its tall stone lighthouse is quite far offshore.

Schoodic Island, Winter Harbor . Part of Acadia National Park, this
61-acre island just off the tip of Schoodic Peninsula is home to bald eagles
and nesting sea birds. Water access only. Very large swells, strong cur-
rents.
