In-Depth Information
One of the favorites for hikers is Sargent Mountain Pond . Located at
1,000 feet in a valley between Sargent and Penobscot Mountains, the
dark, iron-rich waters of this one-acre pond stay cold well into summer.
There is a small place to jump in along a trail and several log sitting
benches.
Rules of the Road for Bikers
User conflicts are inevitable in any popular area, and increasing
fondness for Acadia National Park's carriage roads has led to the
formation of user courtesy rules. Park officials urge walkers to
yield to horses, and bicyclists to yield to both walkers and horses.
Most of the suggested rules are aimed at reducing bicycle-related
complaints. Concerns about reckless cyclists have prompted the
closing of 10 miles of carriage paths located on private land adja-
cent to the park roads. Other steps may be needed, as signs re-
questing bicycles not use the area have been repeatedly damaged
or removed. Heed all signs and respect private property. Among
the following are some suggestions for avoiding conflict:
Access - Ride on open trails only. Carriage roads and
motor roads are open to bikes. Hiking trails are off-limits.
Low impact - Don't leave skid marks or cause ruts.
Control - Excessive speed threatens everyone. Don't take
up the entire road by riding abreast.
Yield - A friendly greeting warns others that you are
approaching from behind. Bells are recommended.
Speed - Go slowly when passing, or stop altogether.
Never spook animals .
Plan ahead - Bring water, food and clothing for rapid
weather changes.
Park Fees
The Acadia National Park entrance fee is $10 per vehicle, which buys a
permit good for seven days. An individual entering on foot or by bicycle
will be charged $5 for a seven-day pass. An annual pass to Acadia is $20.
Nationwide, the cost of a Golden Eagle Pass , which allows unlimited ac-
cess for a year to any national park or monument, is $50.
Some of the more popular interpretive programs charge a nominal fee.
