Blueberry Picking
Late July and early August is blueberry harvest season in
Maine. From the flat windswept barrens of Washington County,
to the rolling hillside fields in Hancock, Waldo and Knox
Counties, rakers begin their seasonal labors.
INTERESTING FACTS: Recent studies have shown
that blueberries have the highest concentration of can-
cer-fighting antioxidants of any fruit native to North
America. Maine, which harvests millions of pounds of
blueberries each year, produces 98% of the country's
crop and about half of the amount produced in the
world. Canadian maritime provinces produce the
rest.
While pints and quarts of fresh-raked berries are available at most stores
and farmstands, there is nothing like picking them yourself. Commercial
picking fields charge visitors a small fee, usually by the pint.
