massive Moosehead Lake, with the coast at Belfast. Financial problems
beset the line and it was never completed farther than Burnham Junc-
tion, where it interchanged with the Maine Central just north of
Waterville. The stubborn line never really died, although it fell on hard
times by the latter half of the 20th century.
Luckily for rail fans the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad does a
bustling excursion business throughout the tourist season and well into
the fall. The B&MLRR offers many combinations of trips, including ex-
cursions on fine passenger coaches and open cars pulled by a working
Swedish steam locomotive and others in cars pulled by a trusty diesel.
The tracks wind through attractive countryside, by lakes and along the
Pasagasawamkeag (say that five times real fast; the locals call it the
“Passy” for short) River, see Belfast Harbor and endure a mock train rob-
bery conducted by a bunch of good-natured desperados.
The train is an especially good way to take in the foliage and the crowds
are smaller in the autumn; especially mid-week.
The B&MLRR also offers package deals that include an ocean trip on the
Chippewa , a stately steamship replica, as well as dinner and overnight
lodging deals.
Together with the Belfast Comfort Inn, the B&MLRR offers overnight
packages, including Rail/Sail tickets, lunch aboard the train, and an
overnight stay with a deluxe continental breakfast. Package prices ($169
in season) are based on two adults. Custom packages are also available
with options like lobster dinners and additional nights at the hotel. The
Belfast Comfort Inn is a new hotel complete with an indoor swimming
pool, hot tub, and a beautiful view of Penobscot Bay. Prices vary accord-
ing to the season.
Trains carry First Class Cars, Coach Cars, Swedish Dining Cars, and
Open Air Cars. Gift shops located at both stations feature railroading
memorabilia and other local treasures. The Maskers Theater is located
at the Belfast Station for an extra evening activity. Inquire about sched-
ules.
Trips leave several times daily from downtown Belfast and from the line's
headquarters at Unity Station inland.
