Washington Pond
,orcon-
tinue south through local landmarks such as
Stickney Corner, Bogues
Corner, Davis Corner

Waldoboro
. Most likely none of those folks still live on those corners, but
it's fun to make note of them as you pass by.
River Road Newcastle to Boothbay
15 miles, 30 minutes
Highlights:
While there is only one way to get to most places in Maine,
there is a back way to get to the bustling tourist town of
Boothbay Har-
bor
. Route 27, just east of Wiscasset is the obvious choice, but for folks com-
ing from the east the sneak route begins in
Newcastle
, just over the river
from its overshadowing sister Damariscotta.
Route:
Simply known as the
River Road
, this route follows the
Damariscotta River
south, although to call it a river at this stage is
somewhat of a misnomer. It is really a long, narrow, tidal salt water bay.
The road is characterized by its narrow width and its lack of shoulders. It
is mostly forested with the occasional historic farm or old sea captain's
house. Not far from Newcastle you'll pass the
Dodge Point Preserve,
with its many hiking and ski trails and thousands of feet of natural shore-
line. The parking areas are well marked. Ten miles from your start you'll
hit Route 27 anyway. A left will take you into the picturesque harbor. Stay
on Route 27 for a round trip to
Southport Island
and the many water
views it offers. A left on Route 96 just before entering the village will take
you out to
Linekin Neck
. The public boat launching ramp at the tip of
the peninsula is a great oceanside place to “sneak” a picnic.
Route 130 Damariscotta to Pemaquid
18 miles, 45 minutes
Highlights:
This trip is short on distance but long on scenery.
From Main Street in
Damariscotta
(Route 1B) go south on Route 130.
The turn is right next to Seacoast Texaco, one of the best garages in the
Mid-Coast.
Route 130 roughly parallels the east side of the
Damariscotta River
for
a few miles before cutting east toward
Bristol
. Pass through this quiet
village and head another seven or eight miles to
New Harbor
. Here you
will find
Pemaquid Beach State Park
, which offers good saltwater
