Places to Paddle
Saco River, Biddeford Pool
The lower, tidal reaches of the Saco River, below the dams in
downtown Biddeford/Saco, as well as the nearby Biddeford Pool,
await exploration by paddlers. The one-mile-wide pool is mostly
a mud flat at low water.
Watch the current at the breakwaters at the
mouth of the river. It can be quite strong in
these areas and is therefore dangerous.
Several beaches, the East Point Wildlife Sanctuary and nearby islands
await discovery. Call
781-2330 for permission to visit. There are nu-
merous small boat-launching areas at Biddeford Pool and along the river
in both Biddeford and Saco.
WATCHABLE WILDLIFE: The pool is very attrac-
tive to wading birds and other species. Wood Island,
with its lighthouse, is an Audubon Sanctuary and is
closed for parts of the year during nesting season.
Mousam River
Two sections of the Mousam River, one tidal, the other fresh, both sepa-
rated by dams, await paddlers. The lower, tidal section is best accessed
from the boat launch ramp along Route 9. Ride the incoming tide up-
stream as the river meanders toward downtown Kennebunk. There is
also a salt marsh area just downstream of the ramp to explore. Tidal cur-
rents can be strong.
The second section, above several dams, is best accessed from the bridge
on the Thompson Road. You can paddle three miles upstream on barely
moving water until you hit a rapid just below the Old Falls Pond dam.
There is also a boat ramp on the nearby Kennebunk River which allows
ocean and upstream access.
Scarborough Marsh
Considered prime bird watching territory, the 3,000-acre Scarborough
Marsh offers a seemingly endless number of channels and sloughs to ex-
