In-Depth Information
Covered Bridge
Covered bridges are a quintessential symbol of New England. Typical of
Yankee frugality, the spans were covered over to afford the structure pro-
tection from wind and rain, make it easier to keep the decking free of
snow and ice, and to help keep horses calm while crossing high over rush-
ing streams.
At their high point there were hundreds of covered bridges throughout
the region. Most succumbed to old age, fire, or flood.
DID YOU KNOW? In an era when chaperones kept a
constant eye on courting couples, young lovers partic-
ularly liked the privacy afforded by covered bridges,
as a trip across one was the perfect opportunity to steal
a kiss!
Babb's Bridge, 1843 , Presumpscot River. Maine's oldest covered bridge.
It is located off the River Road, 2½ miles north of South Windham, then a
half-mile west between the towns of Gorham and Windham. Burned in
1973, it has since been rebuilt.
Shopping
T
he south coast area has without a doubt the highest concentration of
shopping opportunities in Maine. They range from the sprawling
Maine Mall just off the Maine Turnpike and I-295 in Portland to trendy
shops and boutiques in the quaint villages of Kennebunkport and
Ogunquit. What most visitors seek, however, are outlet and factory
stores.
The Difference Between An Outlet & A Factory Store
Outlets are usually taken to mean a store selling regular mer-
chandise at a discount. Factory stores often feature incredible
deals on close-outs, discontinued items and or seconds and re-
turns.
