Wildlife Refuges
East Point Sanctuary , Biddeford. Ocean walk and bird pre-
serve on 40 acres owned by the Audubon Society. Trail traverses
rocky shore, pebble beach, and field. Small parking area. Short
distance to beginning of trail.

Fore River Sanctuary , Portland. 70-acre Audubon Society preserve
featuring several miles of hiking and walking trails, a 30-foot waterfall
on the Fore River, and a stroll along the abandoned Cumberland and Ox-
ford Canal. Adequate parking off the end of Rowe Avenue off Route 25.
Trails marked with colored blazes. Maps available at parking area. Day
use only.

Kennebunk Plains , Kennebunk. Nearly two square miles of prime hab-
itat for endangered grasshopper sparrow and other endangered animals
and plants. Controlled jointly by the Nature Conservancy and the Maine
Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Conservancy office at 14

Vaughn's Island Preserve , Kennebunkport. A 40-acre island sepa-
rated from mainland by creek (tidal). Hardwood forest covers cellar holes
and other evidence of former settlement. Hiking trails. Access by foot or
boat, but pay attention to tides. (No telephone.)
Back Cove , Portland. Hugh tidal basin that separates city from sub-
urbs. Very attractive to birds. Paralleled by I-295 on South and Baxter
Blvd. on the North. Running, biking track circles entire basin. Picnicing

Goosefare Brook , Saco. A 300-acre parcel purchased by the Nature
Conservancy for eventual inclusion in the Rachel Carson National Wild-

Saco Heath , Saco. An 800-acre bog environment protected by Nature
Conservancy. Nature and hiking trails, including boardwalk through the
heath. Benches for walkers and bird watchers. Adequate parking off

Prout's Neck Bird Sanctuary , Scarborough. Access to this private
sanctuary in the middle of summer is difficult. There is no parking. Self-
guided nature trail and boardwalk through woods. At end of Route 207.
