At the northeastern end of this region lies Freeport , home to the legend-
ary L.L. Bean and dozens of other outlet and factory stores. DeLorme ,
the homegrown mapping company that has now become an information
and software giant, is headquartered here with Eartha, the world's larg-
est three-dimensional globe, which spins silently in the three-story glass
atrium lobby of their company superstore.
Still, despite its urban and suburban nature, the South Coast still has
plenty to offer those who seek to cast off the cloak of civilization. From na-
ture centers, bird sanctuaries and state parks in Scarborough to the Ra-
chel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Kennebunk to Bradbury
Mountain State Park in Pownal, escape from the hustle and bustle is
only minutes away.

Crescent Beach State Park , Cape Elizabeth. Small family
seaside park not far from Portland. A fine sand beach nearly a
mile long with one rocky section. Ocean swimming and fishing.
Parking, picnic tables, snack bar and an entrance fee.

Two Lights State Park , Cape Elizabeth. This park features picnic ar-
eas and a walking path, from which you can admire the two lighthouses
and the Atlantic beyond. Site of a shore battery and two anti-aircraft gun
emplacements in WWII. Fishing from rocky shore. Plenty of parking. En-
trance fee. Two Lights Road off Route 77.

Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park , Freeport. Small busy park on penin-
sula just minutes from the outlet mall hustle and bustle. Scenic location
on river and bay. Forested area features self-guided nature walk along
the Harraseeket River and Casco Bay. Fee parking, picnic area, fishing
allowed. Just offshore is an active osprey nest.
