Country Fairs
W
ith its strong rural communities, Maine is home to scores of country
fairs. While they are scheduled throughout the warmer months,
most are held in August and September.
Fairs range from traditional agricultural events, where local cooks enter
their best pies and farmers their strongest oxen, to the Common Ground
Fair, which is run by the Maine Organic Farmer's Association and is as
much a celebration of New Age counterculture as it is a place to exhibit
vegetables and gardening techniques. More than 50,000 people turned
out for that popular fair in 1998.
Maine is also home to many popular festivals throughout the summer.
Some of the major ones include the Lobster Festival and the Blues Festi-
val on the Waterfront in Rockland, the annual Blueberry Festival in
Machias, the Salmon Festival in Eastport and the annual Clam Festival
in Yarmouth.
Most fairs belong to the Maine Association of Agricultural Fairs. They
maintain the exact calendar of dates, which change each year. The fairs
listed below are in order from earliest in the month until latest. The asso-
ciation can be reached at Maine Association of Agricultural Fairs ,
