Sporting Camps
One of the state's most enjoyable traditions is a stay at a Maine Sporting
Camp. Back at the turn of the century, before logging roads opened up
much of the interior, such establishments were the main gateways to the
wild.
Usually located on lakes or rivers, sporting camps offered hunters and
fishermen rugged comforts such as cozy log cabins, clean sheets and
warm blankets, home-cooked meals, equipment and boat rentals, as well
as the services of a stable of reliable Registered Maine Guides. Entire
families or parties returned year, after year, after year.
The names of these camps are legendary: Packard's on Sebec Lake,
Nugent's North in the Allagash, or Bowlin Camps on the East Branch of
the Penobscot River south of Matagamon Lake.
During the 1960s and 1970s many smaller sporting camps fell into disre-
pair or went out of business. Since that time, however, there has been a
renaissance of sorts as a new generation has taken over these camps, or
started new ones. In Princeton, on Long Lake, one enterprising couple
rescued a run-down property that had been subdivided by developers for
condominiums and recreated Long Lake Camps. Here you can sit on the
porch of a weathered log cabin while the waters of the lake literally lap at
the posts.
In Western Maine, guide Greg Drummond and his wife established Clay
Brook Mountain Lodge, an old farm house that has become a favorite
with ski-touring fans and a mandatory lunch stop for hungry snowmobil-
ers.
In Jackman, Hal and Debbie Blood, both registered guides, have estab-
lished Cedar Ridge Outfitters, offering traditional hunting and fishing
trips, family vacations, as well as clean, cozy modern cabins and efficien-
cies.
