Hunting
Maine offers a variety of game animals and birds for hunters of every per-
suasion. The big action comes in the fall when nearly 200,000 residents
and out-of-staters purchase hunting licenses to pursue the elusive
white-tailed deer .
Except for hunters who apply for and get an “any deer” permit, Maine has
a bucks-only rule when hunting season opens at the beginning of Novem-
ber. The first day of the season is for Mainers only. No hunting is allowed
on Sunday. The season ends at dusk on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Archers may hunt earlier; muzzleloaders later.
Moose are hunted as well, with 2,000 permits being issued by lottery
each year. The season runs for one week in October.
Black bear hunting seasons vary with technique, use of dogs, etc. Wild-
life officials estimate there are approximately 22,000 bruins in the state.
The open seasons and bag limits for small game such as rabbit, hare,
raccoon, squirrel, etc., vary by date and area.
Upland birds such as woodcock, pheasant, quail and ruffed grouse, can
be hunted beginning October 1.
The season on duck and geese varies and is set by an oversight board
each year in late August.
