6. Skeleton of the rhinoceros-sized ceratopsian dinosaur
Triceratops . It and other ceratopsian genera were quite
common in North America during the Late Cretaceous.
7. Restoration of the Early
Cretaceous feathered dinosaur
Caudipteryx . This turkey-sized
animal, along with several other
feathered dinosaurs, comes from
the Liaoning Province of
northeastern China.
5. This 6-m-long ankylosaur known as
Sauropelta lived in North America during
the Early Cretaceous. Some ankylosaurs
had a large bony club at the end of the tail.
8. During the Late Cretaceous,
numerous ornithopods known as
Maiasaura nested in colonies in
northern Montana and tended their
young long after hatching. In this
scene, a female leads her young to
a feeding area.
9. Two Late Cretaceous pachycephalosaurs,
Stegoceras (foreground) and
Pachycephalosaurus . Notice the
dome-shaped skulls that resulted from
thickening of the bones. Perhaps these were
used in butting contests.
10. Some ornithopods, had head crests that
might have functioned as chambers to amplify
bellowing. This scene from the Late Cretaceous
