3. Click Layers in the taskbar.
4. The Layers panel displays with a background layer.
Understanding Background Layers
A Background layer is automatically created when you open a photo or
blank document in the Photo Editor. It is a special layer in that it is com-
posed of pixels only and is always at the bottom of the stacking order in
the Layers panel. By default it is partially locked, and in this state its im-
age cannot be edited or modified.
To modify a Background layer you must convert it to a regular Image lay-
er by double-clicking it in the Layers panel. Click and type a name for the
layer in the Name box of the New Layer window. Set the Blending mode
and Opacity settings, and then click OK. The layer is converted to an im-
age layer. You can also convert a Background layer to an Image layer by
clicking the Partially Locked icon.
5. To create a new layer, click the Create New Layer button in the Layers panel.
