Benefit of Color Overlay Mask for Selections
Sometimes it is easier to see what you are selecting and your object's
edges for defining the selection if you display the Color Overlay Mask
from the Selection menu. When this feature is displayed you see the edge
of your selection very clearly.
Using the Refine Selection Brush
The third and final brush that you can use to precisely define and finalize your selection is
the Refine Selection Brush. This brush focuses on an already defined selection and lets you
push and pull the selection based on the selected object's edges. You can manually guide
the tool to snap the selection tighter or looser to the object's edge. It has a special cursor
that visually guides you through the process of pushing the selection out or pulling the se-
lection tighter to the selected object's edges.
This tool is new to Photoshop Elements 13.
1. In the Photo Editor in Quick mode, make a selection using the Selection tool. See
the previous topic.
2. With the Quick Selection tool still selected, click the Refine Selection Brush op-
tion from the Tool Options bar.
3. Set the brush size by dragging the Size slider left or right to adjust the brush tip
size. You can also click in the Size field and type a pixel size.
4. Drag the Snap Strength slider left or right to adjust the snap strength of the tool to
the object's edge being selected. You can also click in the Snap Strength field and
type a percentage number between 1 and 100%.
5. Click the Add to Selection option or the Subtract from Selection option to refine
your selection.
