Searching and finding media based on metadata
Using the View menu commands to find media
As you build your digital media Catalog with photos, videos, and audio, your Catalog can
get quite large. Finding the media that you want can be a challenge. Organizing by albums
and folders helps, but Elements Organizer also offers other strategies for finding similar or
specific media. Organizer lets you tag your media with keywords and captions. You can
rate your media as well. Organizer has several views built right in to the workspace that
you can access with a click. You can also explore your media based on People, Places, and
Events. This chapter covers how to tag your photos, videos, and audio with keywords, cap-
tions, and ratings and then use these tags to find similar photos, videos, and audio.
Adding Metadata—Keyword Tags
Elements Organizer lets you manage your digital media by applying metadata to each
photo, video, and audio file in your Catalog. Metadata can be keywords, captions, notes,
and even audio files that are used to describe your media. This lets you quickly find photos,
videos, and audio files. Keyword tags can be a single word or a multiword phrase that
describes the media. You can create custom keyword categories or keyword tags that are
based on people, places, and events. For instance, if you want to be able to identify all pho-
tos that have a certain person in the image, apply a People keyword to that photo. Captions,
notes, and audio files also can be added, and these can be anything you want to describe
your media.
Use of the Adaptive Grid
This chapter covers the Organizer metadata and search functionality
through the use of the Adaptive Grid display. This Adaptive Grid feature
is new to Photoshop Elements 13. It can be toggled on and off by pressing
Command-D (Mac)/Control+D (PC) or by choosing View, Details from
the menu bar. When Adaptive Grid is toggled off, the legacy view of earli-
er versions of Organizer displays media in the Viewer.
The Tags and Information panel lets you create keywords and keyword categories as well
as attach the metadata to your digital media. It has two tabs, the Tags tab and the Informa-
tion tab.
