Figure 13.5 Behavior of BT-20 tumor xenografts in six nude mice. Initial tumor
volume (solid bars) was measured 14 days after animals were injected with BT-20
cells. The tumor in each animal was then injected with either 5mg of 2-5
mglass
particles (animals 1-3) or radioactive ( 166 Ho) particles (animals 4-6). The glass
composition was 7wt% Ho 2 O 3 , 20wt% MgO, 21wt% Al 2 O 3 , and 52wt% SiO 2 .
The final tumor volume (hatched bars) was measured 12 days after injecting the
glass particles. (Drawn from data presented in Ref. [19].)

Figure 13.6 Example of how the growth of a malignant tumor is reduced when
injected with 90 YAS glass microspheres. Tumor shown for each mouse is 14 days
after each mouse was injected with zero (A), 10 (B), 50 (C), 100 (D), and 150 (E)
microcuries of 90 Y glass microspheres. (Adapted from [20]. Copyright (1998) Digest
