Figure 13-19. Unity offers professional support for art, scripting, debugging, and more
The first projects I worked on in a startup collaboration were a learning experience for the whole
team, all beginners. When we thought we were ready to publish, we hired a professional developer
to review our work. It was a fun exercise that gave us confidence in what we had done well, and
provided fast-tracked, focused learning for the areas where we needed improvement while also
significantly shortening approval times for publication.
Remember to share the love as you see your fellow developers soliciting feedback for their
projects by giving them thoughtful, detailed comments that outline what you think is done well and
suggesting improvements where you can.
Murphy Is Everywhere
Murphy's Law states that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Really, really wrong. I was
extremely nervous for my first important interview—rehearsing my brilliantly prepared responses and
clutching my lucky penny in my pocket while I waited my turn. Right in the middle of the interview,
a button popped off my shirt and landed square on the interviewer's desk. There was a moment of
stunned silence as we both stared at the button in surprise and horror, then I grabbed my blouse and
he grabbed his phone. Fortunately his secretary had a safety pin, and once I pulled myself together
we proceeded with the interview. I didn't dissolve into a puddle of mortification and I went on to
make the short list, though I wasn't the final choice. After that experience, subsequent interviews
were a breeze.
Whether for a job inquiry or an interview, always have backup screenshots and videos that you
can use in the event the demo fails, which happens more often than you might think for a variety of
reasons. Remember: They are busy, your inquiry is one of many, and you want to make it easy for
them to see what you can do. Demo failures do occur, but good screenshots and video along with
your source code will support your job inquiry or prevent an interview from coming to an immediate
awkward halt.
This applies to a web site portfolio as well; have screenshots and gameplay video alternatives
available along with the playable demo just in case.
