In-Depth Information
If you are interested in a jam, you should be able to find one that suits you on sites like
http://gamejamcentral.com or with a simple online search.
A word about sponsored events: Always read the fine print. Typically the prizes are simply bragging
rights with a bonus of game promotion from the game jam organizers. Some game jams rules can
include transferring some or all rights to the games produced during an event, so be sure you are
aware of the requirements.
Contests and Awards
In general, contests are a competition that offer a reward for winners and sometimes runners-up,
while awards and award ceremonies offer recognition for significant achievements of some kind. You
might find contests where the only prize is bragging rights, and award ceremonies that offer a nice
prize package in addition to the award itself.
Contests
Contests are usually sponsored and offer a prize to the winner. Like jams, these competitions can
take place locally or online, with prize packages large and small, but they usually have a deadline
on the order of months because they are looking for a polished end product rather than a whipped-
together prototype. Large cash prizes are often sponsored by companies as an incentive for
developers to focus on producing games that utilize their software or hardware products. Packages
can include free licenses, additional promotion, and other valuable goodies.
As an example, at the time of this writing Unity and Microsoft have a contest for Unity games that
targets the Windows and Windows Phone platforms (Figure 13-17 ).
