While Unity has crossed the threshold of being the majority choice among game developers, you'll
also see references to other game engines here. The “post mortems” developers contribute after
game publication as they analyze what went right and wrong in the development and publication
processes provide excellent practical learning points straight from the trenches.
Platform-Specific Developer Resources
Manufacturers of the various target platforms want developers to create games for their respective
systems and so provide significant developer support. At the very least they will provide
documentation, but most have similar forums of their own. Usually they have some combination of
technical documentation, tutorials, a technical forum, and a developer community forum.
While most of these forums require you to create a user account, the requirements can vary widely.
Some require legal business-entity information such as a tax ID to register, while others don't require
this until you are ready to publish. Some charge fees, though again this might not be required until
you are ready to publish. None require that you purchase the hardware, but it is a best practice and
strongly recommended to test your game on the target platform hardware and not just the virtual
simulator before publishing.
The following are a few of the more common sites:
Sony: http://us.playstation.com/develop (Figure 13-5 ). If you aren't in the United States, Sony has
additional forums for other regions, so take a moment to do a quick search for yours.
