Summary
Although we may not pay much attention to how data are rep
resented in various applications, the details matter.
Numeric integers may be constrained in size.
Real or floatingpoint numbers may have limited accuracy.
Computations with numbers may produce roundoff errors,
further affecting accuracy.
Data storage may affect what characters and languages we
can use conveniently in our applications.
Pictures are displayed pixel by pixel, so storage considera
tions can affect file size and image quality.
Altogether, how data are represented can have serious implica
tions in the applications that we use, and we need to be aware of
how storage details might effect our applications.
