A PostScript version of the foliage file also was created in the
writing of this chapter. However, that file was about 12 megabytes
in size, about 12 times larger than the original. PostScript often does
not work well for pictures when the images begin in another format.
Example: Library Shelves
The original picture of these library shelves is shown in Figure 2.3a, with the
revised GIF and JPEG formats in Figures 2.3b and 2.3c, respectively.

Again, mediumresolution GIF and highresolution JPEG for
mats were chosen because as storage files they were approximately
the same size. In this case, the revised .jpg file again is slightly less
crisp in the foreground, and the colors for that region also are some
what truer in the gif file. However, the colors blend together some
what in the back shelf on the .gif file, while that shelf on the jpeg file
retains shading better.
