1. a. Provide careful definitions for each word or phrase
listed in “Terminology from This Chapter.”
b. From this list of terms, identify those that have to do
with typical Web pages; that is, terms that involve the
display or communication of information between a
user's browser and a Web server.
c. From the list of “Terminology from This Chapter,”
identify those terms that relate to behindthescenes ac
cumulation of data about a user.
d. From the same terminology list, identify those terms re
lated to keeping information private and away from
unauthorized parties.
2. This exercise assumes you have access to a computer con
nected to the Internet.
a. Determine the current IP address for your computer.
Details of determining the IP address will depend on your
particular environment. Often, this will be identified as a
Network option within a System or Preferences option.
Alternatively, you might open a command or terminal win
dow and issue an IPlookup command. On some systems,
this command might be called nslookup or host.
b. If you are working in a lab with several computers, deter
mine the IP address of several other computers in the same
lab. What parts of the IP address are the same for all com
puters in the lab? What parts are different? Can you ex
plain any similarities or differences?
3. Many computers on the Internet have a command to find the
IP address of any site on the World Wide Web. Use the com
mand on your computer to check the following addresses
given in this chapter:
a. grinnell.edu
b. cs.grinnell.edu
c. cs.utexas.edu
d. ukc.ac.uk
