Discussion Questions
1. Simulate the workings of an Ethernet network through the
following group exercise.
At the start, each person in the class is assigned two class
mates, each of whom is to receive a separate communication.
Each overall communication is to be three to five medium
length sentences. To communicate with classmates, each per
son must speak aloud, giving first the intended recipient's
name and then saying up to six words of text. Because com
munications are several sentences of multiple words, the full
text of the communication will have to be divided into several
distinct messages. To speak, each person follows these rules:
The person waits until no one else is already speaking.
When the room is otherwise silent, a person can start a
name/text message.
If two or more people start speaking at the same time, then
the speakers must stop and wait a random amount of time
before trying again. (To maintain some level of randomness,
each person might be given a list of random numbers ini
tially, with the idea that the person uses the list to determine
how long to wait. If a person has to wait a second time, the
length of the wait is the second number on the list.)
Although everyone hears all messages, a person writes
down the text spoken only if the message included her or
his name.
