Because the sockets have a similar appearance, it is not uncom
mon for computer users to confuse these two types of plugs and
sockets when trying to connect their machines. Although the RJ45
jack is too wide to fit into a typical RJ11 socket, the RJ11 jack of
ten will fit into an RJ45 socket. However, because the wiring stan
dards are quite different for the two standard jacks, plugging the
RJ11 jack into the wrong socket could cause electrical damage to
sensitive components.
