ted to your Apple TV.
Android and AirPlay
If you've been reading through this chapter and wondering when I'll mention your Galaxy
Note or HTC smartphone, my apologies. You probably noticed by now that AirPlay does its best
to ward off non-Apple devices through a fairly locked-down network (aside from speakers, of
course) but there are small chinks in its armor for Android users to exploit.
Android users should take a look at AirSync ( www.doubletwist.com ), which streams audio
and video in the DoubleTwist app (which can sync to iTunes on your computer) on your
Android device via AirPlay. It does work, though not reliably — its AirPlay button often disap-
pears, for example.
Stream only audio in video streaming from an iOS device
In some situations, you may want to stream only audio to an AirPlay device and keep the video
on your iPad screen. For example, you might be watching a concert and want the audio to play
through an AirPlay speaker or, as I often do, follow a recipe video on an iPad in your kitchen while
the audio plays through the room's AirPlay speaker at a higher volume to drown out the sizzling.
This split-streaming is perfectly possible with any app that offers AirPlay streaming: Just select a
speaker, not an Apple TV, from the list of available AirPlay devices so only the audio will stream over
AirPlay, keeping the picture on your device's screen.
Stream video via AirPlay from a computer
As I've mentioned, Apple limits AirPlay video streaming on a computer to iTunes — just use the
AirPlay button ( ) to the right of the playback controls to select your Apple TV — and to screen
mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion if you have a compatible Mac (typically, a 2011 or later model). You
can tell if your Mac supports screen mirroring because its icon in the menu bar is the AirPlay icon (
) rather than the Displays icon (
). Be sure your Apple TV is connected to the network;
otherwise even your mirroring-compatible Mac will show the Displays icon (
) instead of the
AirPlay icon ( ) in the menu bar.
Here's how to mirror a screen from your Mac:
1. From the menu bar, choose > Apple TV (if you have more than one Apple TV, choose
the one you want to mirror the display to).
That's it!
If you don't see the Apple TV option in the menu, go to the Displays system preference
(choose Apple > System Preferences, then click Displays) and check the Show Mirroring Options in
the Menu Bar When Available option. While you're at it, choose Apple TV from the AirPlay mirroring
