process. It also saved me around 8GB on my hard drive by killing those pesky songs that appear mul-
tiple times for one reason or another.
Both Song Genie and TuneUp use smart song recognition technology to analyze the actual wave-
forms of a song rather than go by the name of the track or album, and they are definitely worth in-
vesting in before using iTunes Match or if you simply want a cleaner music library.

Trim the fat
In the same vein as the preceding section, the more you tidy up your iTunes library, the faster
iTunes Match can match your songs. Deleting songs from your library and getting rid of duplicates
will not only save space on your hard drive but also reduce the time iTunes Match takes during setup.
TuneUp does a good job removing duplicates but, if you want to take the manual approach, you
can choose View > Show Duplicate Items in iTunes to show songs that appear more than once in your
library. You might be surprised by just how many they are. Remove the duplicates, get rid of any dud
files and unwanted tracks that may have appeared in your collection over the years, and all should be
well.
A useful way to find songs to delete from your iTunes library is to sort them by time when view-
ing your entire library as a list. Shorter songs tend to be MP3s added by mistake or incomplete songs
that should be removed. Just watch for short tracks that feature as intros to an album. For other sort-
