6. Click the AirPlay button in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window and choose your
Apple TV from the pop-up menu that appears. iTunes starts streaming the radio station to
the Apple TV.
TIP: The same technique works to play podcasts not listed on the Apple TV's Podcasts screen
and not in your iTunes library's subscribed podcasts. Just use a podcast's URL instead of an Internet
radio station's.
Set Up and Use a Remote Control
Your Apple TV comes with a sleek remote control that enables you to navigate its user interface
easily. The Apple Remote usually needs no further maintenance than the occasional battery replace-
ment. However, you can also use your preferred universal remote to control your Apple TV, which
might give you dedicated buttons for actions, such as skipping ahead or back, that the Apple Remote
doesn't offer. As explained in Chapter 3 for audio and Chapter 4 for video, you can also turn your
iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad into a remote, and control your Apple TV from a device that you always
have with you.
Using a different remote offers several advantages:
Simplicity. You can control your Apple TV with the same remote you use for other devices,
so you don't have to switch remotes in midstream.
Easier control. You can teach your Apple TV to respond to buttons beyond the six on the
Apple Remote. Extra buttons can make playback easier. For example, you can dedicate a
button to skip ahead or return to the beginning of an item.
Handiness. If you have large hands, you may find a larger remote easier to use — even if it
has many more buttons.
The Apple TV is pretty compatible with other remotes and works with many different kinds. If
you already have a universal remote, chances are that you can get the Apple TV to respond to it. Sim-
ilarly, if you already have an extra remote, it's worth trying that remote before buying a new one. If
you want to use a universal remote, make sure it has a free device setting. If you choose a single-
device remote, use one that you're not using with any other device.
NOTE: Another option is to use an existing remote that has extra buttons you're not using for
your current remote-control setup. You can map those buttons to control both your existing devices
and your Apple TV from the same remote control — but it may mean using awkwardly placed or
little-used buttons on the remote for the Apple TV.
Once you have your remote, follow these steps to set it up with your Apple TV:
1. From the Home screen, select Settings. The Settings screen appears.
2. Select General. The General screen appears.
3. Select Remotes. The Remotes screen appears, as shown in Figure 10-7.
4. If you're adding a universal remote, choose an unused setting. If you're setting up a single-
purpose remote that will be dedicated to the Apple TV, you don't need to change anything.
5. Select Learn Remote. The first Learn Remote screen appears.
6. Using your Apple Remote, select Start. The second Learn Remote screen appears, shown in
Figure 10-8.
