In-Depth Information
Free Video Monitoring System that, as the name implies, is truly wireless. Unlike webcams and the
like, this kit doesn't need software to set up, just a broadband connection and a free port on your
router. Connect the base station, place the cameras, and you're up and running. Neither of the in-
cluded two battery-powered cameras require cables (they work wirelessly with the base station), and
you can place them in all sorts of places, including shelves, tables, or stuck on walls.
You can access live video from the cameras via your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, PC, or Mac by
connecting to a dedicated website and — this is the really cool bit — pan and zoom the cameras while
you watch. You can log in and view the feed from your cameras wherever you have Internet access on
your iOS devices or computer. Unfortunately, the cameras in this kit don't offer a night-vision option,
so they won't be ideal for monitoring outside your home in the dark. But for mundane tasks (like my
checking on my cat while I'm away!), you really can't go wrong.
Meat Thermometer
The $100 i Grill from iDevices is a cooking thermometer that connects to an app (see Figure 9-9)
on your iOS device via Bluetooth. Rather than hover around the grill to make sure your meat doesn't
burn, you can spend time away from the heat enjoying yourself with your guests, safe in the know-
ledge that you can check the internal temperature of your food from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
Touch. With the option to use two temperature probes, the iGrill can cater for more than just one
menu item and, if you're really happy with what you're cooking, you can share information about
your food to Facebook from the app.
