In-Depth Information
You can access that other computer's optical drive only from a Mac without its own optical drive,
such as the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with Retina display, late-2012 iMac, and Mac Mini and Mac
Mini Server models without an optical drive. The Remote Disc software is part of OS X on those
Macs, so there's no need to run an application; it's automatic.
The Mac without an optical drive and the computer whose optical drive you want to use need to
be on the same network. Here are the steps to set up another Mac's optical drive for sharing over the
network:
1. On the Mac with the optical drive you want to access, launch System Preferences (choose Apple > System Preferences or
click the System Preferences icon on the Dock).
2. Click the Sharing icon to open the Sharing system preference.
3. Select the check box next to DVD or CD Sharing and close the Sharing system preference, as shown in Figure 8-15.

The setup steps for a Windows PC's optical drive are nearly same, but you also have to configure
the Windows firewall to allow access to that drive:
1. On the PC with the optical drive you want to access, launch the Control Panel (via the Start menu on Windows XP, Vista,
and 7; via the Settings charm or File Explorer in Windows 8).
2. Click on Hardware and Sound to get a list of hardware-related control panels. Click DVD or CD Sharing.
3. In the dialog box that appears, select the check box next to Enable DVD or CD Sharing and close the dialog box.
4. In the Control Panel, click System and Security to get a list of security-related control panels. Under Windows Firewall,
click the Allow a Program through the Windows Firewall link.
5. In the window that appears, click Change Settings and then Allow Another Program.
6. In the dialog box that appears, click Browse, then navigate to C:\Program Files (X86)\DVD or CD Sharing, select OSDA-
gent.exe, and click Open.
7. Click Add in the screen that appears.
8. In the confirmation window that appears, be sure that Home/Work is selected and click OK to enable sharing of the PC's
optical drive.
