The third-generation Apple TV
With any of these devices in your home, you can wirelessly stream media, photos, videos, and
music, to your chosen device from a Mac or iOS device, and even play certain games for the iPhone,
iPod Touch, and iPad over AirPlay on your Apple TV.
The video component of AirPlay is currently restricted solely to streaming to the Apple TV, but
the audio option is far more flexible, with a wide range of speakers and docks available.
Setup is as simple as powering up a device and selecting it from the AirPlay pop-over on your iOS
device in most situations or from iTunes on your Mac or PC.
What hardware and software do you need?
To use AirPlay, you need a compatible host device and a compatible receiver. This could be a Mac
and an Apple TV or an iOS device and an AirPlay-compatible speaker. Ideally, you'll want all the
above and maybe a few more speakers for a complete wireless setup. Alternatively, for audio-only
streaming, you can also transmit from a Mac or iOS device to an Apple AirPort Express base station
connected by an audio cable to a speaker or hi-fi system.
You need to ensure that your iOS device or Mac is running the most recent software it can
handle. For streaming audio and video from apps on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, you need iOS
4.3 or later; on a Mac, you need iTunes 10.2 or later. Pretty much any Mac running OS X 10.5 Leo-
pard or later can stream audio or video via AirPlay in iTunes, as can pretty much any PC running
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or later, Windows 7, or Windows
8 (but not Windows RT). For iOS devices, you can use any iPad, the iPhone 3G S or later, and the
second-generation (2010 model) or later iPod Touch. Your Apple TV also needs to be the second-gen-
eration model or later (that is, one of the black models) and be running Apple TV software version 5.1
or later.
To mirror your iPad's display to a TV or projector via an Apple TV using what Apple calls AirPlay
mirroring, you need an iPad 2 or later model (that is, any iPad except the very first model). For an
iPhone, you need an iPhone 4S or 5. To mirror a Mac's display, you need a Mac with the appropriate
