document window when set to
iCloud, such as when first opening an app like Pages or Preview or saving a docu-
ment for the first time.
Once you have saved a file to iCloud using an iCloud Documents-compatible app, you can access
that file on all devices connected to your iCloud account that use the same app.
TIP: You can find iCloud documents via the Mac's standard search functions. If you're searching
from a Finder window, be sure to click the This Mac tab to find iCloud documents; a Spotlight search
automatically looks in iCloud. And if you want to open such a document using an app other than the
one you created it with, right-click or Control+click it and choose Open With from the contextual
menu that appears and choose a different app from the one associated to its filename extension.
Share iCloud documents on an iOS device
The process for using iCloud Documents on an iOS device varies from app to app. Some —
mainly Apple's Pages, Keynote, and Numbers — simply automatically store all documents in iCloud if
iCloud Documents is enabled for them. Others, such as GoodReader, present iCloud as if it were a
folder along with its other storage locations.
How you enable iCloud Documents also varies. For Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, you go to their
panes in the Settings app and set the Use iCloud switch to On. For GoodReader, the Use iCloud
switch is accessed within the app, via its General settings pane (tap
to open the Settings pop-
over, then tap General Settings).
Transfer files via iCloud.com
iCloud documents from Apple's Pages, Keynote, and Number are available from iCloud.com for
download to your computer; click the iWork button on the iCloud.com home screen to see available
documents (see Figure 8-10), click the tab for the desired document type (Pages, Keynote, or Num-
bers), then click a document to have the Download button appear for that document.
To upload a file to iCloud.com to one of these apps, go to the app's pane, click the Settings button
( ) icon at the upper right of the window, choose Upload Document from the menu that appears,
select the desired document on your computer in the dialog box that appears, and click Open.
