other devices. iCloud acts as a transit point, saving the latest version so it can relay it to other devices
as needed.
But Pages' iCloud documents are available only to Pages, not other apps — even if they could
open the file.
iCloud Documents-compatible apps are available in just two places: the iOS App Store and the
Mac App Store. Apple requires developers who want to use iCloud Documents in their apps to sell
those apps through Apple's app stores.
Many apps that support iCloud Documents have only iOS versions, such as GoodReader. Many
have only OS X versions, such as Apple's own TextEdit and Preview. Some have both, such as iA
Writer, Pages, Keynote, and Numbers.
Turn on iCloud Documents
As with most iCloud features, iCloud Documents is controlled from the Settings app on iOS
devices and via the System Preferences app on a Mac. It is turned on by default when you set up an
iCloud account on a computer or mobile device, and can be switched off and on at will. To work cor-
rectly, be sure to turn on iCloud Documents on all the devices you want to share files.
On a Mac:
1. Choose Apple > System Preferences and click iCloud to open the iCloud system preference.
2. Check the box next to Documents & Data (if it isn't checked already) to turn on iCloud Documents (see Figure 8-8).
